4 Powerful Business Coaching Questions
2022 has been a tough year for everyone, with the cost of living going up, and businesses starting and failing everywhere you look. It can be hard to stay focused on your business when you are thinking about everything else! Over the summer months, many businesses find that their customer base thins out a lot, this is mainly because lots of people are taking breaks, and enjoying the sun, but this year we have a lot of economic issues people are worried about, so there is less money floating around.
As a business owner, how do you stay motivated, keep the business flowing and be productive over these warm summer months?
One thing that any small business owner can do during quiet months is prepare for busier months. This might be writing regular blog posts, you can save these ready for when you don’t have time to post them. If you have no current work, then it might be a good time to work on your digital marketing and general marketing strategy, what’s working for you? What isn’t working for you? Maybe re-thinking your website would be very productive in the long run!
Reflecting on your business to see how you can improve things can often be just as vital as working with your current customers. So use this time to re-focus on what’s important to you and your business. What are your main objectives and how can you achieve them?
Business Coaching with Reboot Coaching offers 1-2-1 sessions to work out what is important to you. You will have the opportunity to slow down and look at your business and life objectively. Read more here.
Questions from a professional business coach
If you’ve never worked with a business coach before, then you might think they just hand you the answers to everything you need. But in reality, they are there to guide you to your own answers and hold you accountable for your own decisions. It’s important for a business coach to ask the right questions in order to provoke thought so the business can reflect on its situation and see it from another perspective.
What does success look like to you?
This question is great because it gets you to stop and think about the real reason that you are running your business. Why did you start it in the first place? Some people’s definition of success comes down to money, which is absolutely fine, as money gives you freedom. Others have a vision of their business, they may have lost sight of this in the years they have been doing it. Sometimes reflecting on where you are versus where you wanted to be 5 years ago, really gets you thinking, which is why this is a powerful business coaching question.
What do you think is stopping you from achieving your goals?
Business and life are full of ways to stop you from achieving your goals, if you know what these are then you have some control over them. Stepping back and thinking about what could be stopping you, will be a massive step forward. If you know what is stopping you, then it’s time to get rid of what’s in your way. When you talk to your business coach, you might realise the only thing in your way is yourself.
Procrastination is a big killer for businesses, there are lots of reasons why you might be procrastinating, it could be because you are bored, or not doing what you are passionate about. According to Micro Biz Mag, 1 in 5 of us procrastinate every single day. But a good way to avoid this mindset is to set goals for yourself, create a list of what you want to achieve, and tick off each task as you go.
What does your business do really well at?
Reflecting on what your business does well is a good way to motivate you and get back on track. Identifying what is going well can give you a better sense of the direction your business should be going. Identifying where your business came from and its foundations will bring you back to why you started the business in the first place, without a solid foundation the business will slowly crumble.
Through thinking about this, you should get an insight into what you want to achieve. This question is a great exercise for a number of reasons as you will start to think of some follow-up questions for yourself:
Is the business doing as well as it should be?
Does the business do what it’s good at?
Is it serving its purpose?
How can I get back to doing what I’m passionate about
All of these questions will get you thinking and bring you to where you want to be.
What are you most proud of?
An important exercise for any business is to consider what you are most proud of. This gives you a positive outlook on what you have achieved so far, giving you personal value. Once you recognise the things you are proud of, it motivates you to keep going and achieve more. It also comes back to the question, of what success looks like, where you might just think it’s all about money, really on looking back you might realise the things that make you proud come from different places.
When you identify what you are proud of, you can then find out what you want to achieve. Maybe you have a milestone in mind that would love to achieve, maybe you want to get to 1000 sales or 10,000 sales. Or maybe you want to get 100 paying clients. Create realistic goals that you can see yourself achieving, even small steps will motivate you to keep going.
