8 reasons why business owners procrastinate.
There are a wide range of reasons why business owners procrastinate. Listed below are 8 of the most common reasons I hear from small business owners and start-ups for not taking action. If you don’t shift your thinking, you are likely to fail.
In no particular order:
Spending too much unfocused time on social media and chasing that hit of dopamine you get when your post is liked. Are you are addicted to the instant gratification?
Action - Schedule focused chunks of time on your social media strategy and execution.
You are so focused, and consumed with the small details that you miss the bigger picture.
Action - Set yourself smart goals.
You surround yourself with people who do not empower you.
Action - Instead, find people who energize, inspire, and support you and spend regular time with them.
You tell yourself that the timing is not right because – “there’s a pandemic, there is an economic downturn, you do not have time, there is a similar product on the market”, and so it goes on…
Action - Ask yourself if this really true or is it an excuse, is there an actionable solution.
You worry about what people think about you and your actions.
Action - Feeling judged is a huge impediment to progress, trust your own inner voice.
You are worried that you are not ready, fully prepared or that you are going to fail. So, you delay launching that start-up, changing your website, introducing a new product range, working on your mission statement etc.
Action - Ask yourself when will you be ready, accept the possibility that there is no perfect time.
You spend all your time looking to the future, what has not been achieved but haven’t noticed and acknowledged your progress.
Action - Support and reward yourself by recognising your wins.
You make lists (great), but the items are described in terms of what you do not want rather than what you do want.
Action - Try writing your goals in positive terms, so you are more likely to achieve them.
If any of these reason’s resonate with you do not worry, because you are not alone, we all procrastinate. Every business owner will have experienced one or more from this list.
The key point to remember is that once you become aware of slipping into procrastination acknowledge that is what you are doing and shift to a more positive mindset and just start doing, it doesn’t matter what, just the action of moving forwards can have huge benefits.
